I am blessed to be a mom and as a newborn photographer I am in a unique position to share what I learned the hard way and what I have learned from the moms in my tribe. I remember reading blogs, books and posts right up until the day my guy was born. And then it all went out the window after 28 hours of labor, haha. It was early in the day when labor started for me and I was hungry when I went in to the hospital. And then they wouldn't let me eat anything! As I look back, I don't know what was worse contractions or the feeling like I was starving to death slowly. When we were released from the hospital, I was desperate for some good food. But what I failed to remember was that what I eat affects my milk and boy did I have a gassy baby.
So I wanted to share with you a breastfeeding food guide. Now every mom and baby are different, so this may not work for you. However most babies have sensitivities to these food for the first 6 weeks of being earth side. Be sure to consult your doula, lactation specialist or pediatrician should you have any concerns. Some of these things are easy to avoid, whereas others are a lot harder. You don't have to avoid these forever, but try to abstain for a couple of days before your portrait session. A gassy baby will be harder to settle, won't hold a pose, will need more feeding breaks and there is a chance that you won't get all the poses you were hoping for.
I want to create memories that you will cherish for the rest of your life. And restricting some or all of these food 48 hours before your newborn portrait session will make everyone's job easier. These once in a lifetime portraits cannot be recreated and I understand how important my role is in your memories. If you have any questions about this please make sure to contact your pediatrician.
